The proof of how effective food can be in training is in these two videos.
This video shows the training fall apart as soon as the high value cheese is no longer present and able to retain Couper's focus and attention.
This may not look like much, but my nervous, anxious , finicky eater Dave just ate 4x what he normally eats just by doing a few, simple things! I left the door open (he can choose to stay or go), I toss the treats towards the exit and I mark (with my tongue cluck) every time he is chewing. I am training him to eat! And giving him the autonomy and free agency to do it or not, establishes the trust he needs to stay and do it. Oh! I also put the cats in another enclosed room. That made a HUGE difference. Even if the door is closed, he is always nervous and aware that they are on the other side. Tonight, he got to relax and trust that they were not coming to make a scene that he needed to police!
Tug is awesome because it teaches dogs to play a high energy game while staying in the “think & learn zone”. The dog starts to anticipate the “drop it” as part of the game and even starts to offer the behavior without being asked! Instead pf going bonkers, the dog is connected to you and you are playing TOGETHER. Additionally, once the dog knows the cue, it can be applied to ANYTHING. Ultimately, the dog learns that taking their mouth off of the item keeps the game going! Just imagine how useful this is when trying to get your pup to drop your favorite shoe! Just grab their favorite tug toy and start playing once the show has been dropped!
Sit stays on a mat or, in this case, a platform is the beginning of teaching your pup to settle down and contain themselves. It's a very useful behavior for a myriad of situations: greetings, meal time, door dashing, waiting at curbs, waiting for elevators, waiting while you talk to a friend, as well as the behavior facilitates an easy, smooth vet or groomers visit. This sequence of videos shows toy poodles Princess Odette and Sterling Harrington acing the session! And with the distraction of another dog! Bravo!
These are behaviors needed to train your pup to settle. This is especially useful when you need to focus your attention elsewhere, are entertaining guests and/or eating dinner. First, train your pup to “Go To Mat”, then “Down”. I’m also training them to retrieve a toy in response to common ambient sound triggers such as the cat meowing or the Amazon delivery truck. I’ll try to get videos of this uploaded in the next few days so stay tuned!

Dog Training with Polly & Finn showing how pups really can stay in a quiet down stay (“Go To Mat” - the rug being their mat for now) amidst movement, noise, a human turning their back and walking away from them! And towards the DINNER TABLE!!!! #pugs #dogtrainer #dogtraining #pugsofinstagram #lasvegasdogtrainer
Finn & Polly! Training them a complex behavior chain that will result in:
1) Hear outside noise (doorbell, knocking, delivery truck, other dogs, cats, etc)
2) Go to Mat
3) Down Stay
Instead of Barking!
This is Day 2 and we are moving the mat all over the house to teach the pups to go to mat wherever they are and whenever the cue is given. I am also making sure they understand the words without the hand gestures. Again, day 2 but making loads of progress! You know your dog knows a behavior when they start offering it before you ask! A+ students!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Polly & Finn learning to go to a mat and settle in a down stay with distance, distraction and duration! I’m moving away and towards them, I’m giving the verbal cue (no hand signal as of today) from a distance and I’m rummaging in my treat bag (very distracting for dogs to witness and not get closer to the treat source! #dogtrainer #dogtraining
